... side of Stargate news, although the producers aren’t yet acknowledging it, The Hollywood Reporter is saying that the new series Stargate Universe has been greenlighted. (Although anytime someone in Hollywood says “younger vibe,” I get nervous.) So…new series and movies from the prior ones!
And tonight’s episode, The Shrine, is getting huge buzz as being one of the most moving of the series.
It should be an interesting Dragon*Con next weekend!
Convention Going Advice Needed
Grasping for the Wind —
To be honest, I am a total convention noob. I've never been to an SF Con and have no idea what to expect.
A week from today, I will be heading to Dragon*Con, the Southeast's biggest convention.
What I need from you all is advice on what I should do to prepare for the convention, what types of events you think are more worthwhile (i.e. Readings vs. Panels, etc.) and general con going advice. I have a schedule, and I have checked some of the author's sites for their scheduled appearances, but other than ...

I’ll have some new blogging-related announcements in the next day or two, schedule permitting. Good stuff. In the meantime, here are some links of interest for science and science fiction.
Science Fiction
Dragoncon makes the headlines now in major news venues like CNN via their ireport category. More conventional reporting in the Altanta newspapers. I’d love to go sometime, and to Comic-Con, but haven’t managed it just yet. Worldcon was always my standard can’t-miss con except for some ...
Dragon*Con — A Tardy Personal Perspective
FanaticSpace —
Dragon*Con is an extravaganza of sci-fi fandom held annually over Labor Day Weekend in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. As of 2008, it spans four hotels and boasts an attendance of more than 30,000 fans. Rumor has it that when the numbers swell with day pass folks, the count can go as high as 50,000. It can be a little overwhelming to attend a convention with 30-50,000 of your, er, um, closest friends. This year, the addition of the Sheraton, and the completed Marriott renovation, made the long Labor Day weekend a ...
RevolutionSF vs. Sci-Fi Convention 2008 (Feature)
RevolutionSF —
Every year, RevolutionSF's Joe Crowe attempts to survive a sci-fi convention. Here is this year's terrifying tale. I went to DragonCon in Atlanta, GA with my beautiful and tolerant wife and our child, Quin Crowe, Queen of the Universe. She is five years old and awesome. I hosted two game shows and appeared on panels in my guise as RevolutionSF raconteur. Now that I have been on panels and hosted stuff for awhile, I can never go back to merely sitting in the audience or going to a con and doing nothing. Which kind of bites me in the heiney-bottom. But I dig it, because I ...

... Booths at book conventions are great. I love to stop by and talk with the person running the booth, even if they are just an employee. Oftentimes, they are just as excited about their books as I am, in a truly heartfelt way, and getting to talk books with them is fun. My own trip to Dragon*Con last year was so much fun because I had opportunity to meet people in and around the booths. Add to that the opportunity for a face to face with an author and conventions and publisher booths is the most enjoyable from of marketing. Sadly, conventions are limited in ...

Certainly it can be pricey, but the price can be lessened if you're willing and able to find roomies to help defray the costs. If you're going to go, buy your ticket earlier than later, because the costs increases as it gets closer to the date of the convention. Go to www.dragoncon.org for complete details. P.S. BLOG Browncoats Redemption fan film
SFX —
How many proposed fan films come to fruition? Blogger Laura McConnell shares details of the Browncoats: Redemption film that will be unveiled at Dragon*Con : If You Can't Do Somethin' Smart, Do Somethin' Right Everyone knows that in today's economy, saving is smart. Not only that, making sure to take care of number one by limiting charity contributions and working overtime seems to be in vogue (if there's work to be had, of course). And with unemployment still a concern and many struggling to make ends meet, that's understandable. It's a smart move to make sure you've got some ...

Online and Away
Angel Station —
So . . . I'm off to Dragoncon . I'll try to check in with you all, but I may be having too much fun. But since I'm going to be away for a while, I thought I'd leave you with a question. Actually, it's the usual question. How can Walter get more fame and money? I couldn't help but notice that this year's Hugo novel list was tilted toward people with a high online profile. Cory, Charlie, Neil, and John Scalzi all have a big web presence, and while Neal Stephenson doesn't, he's nevertheless idolized by cybergeeks for writing stuff like Cryptonomicon and Snow Crash . It's not ...

Niches, Typecasting, and Stereotypes
Ecstatic Days —
The other day, I was chatting with some of my co-workers at my day job, and the subject of Dragon*Con came up—of which I’m a director—and particularly last Dragon*Con, where we had Leonard Nimoy as a guest. The discussion got around to how he has embraced his Star Trek lineage now where in the past he tried to distance himself from it, not wanting to be typecast forever as Spock.
It started me musing upon the nature of fame and creative pigeonholes. From where I’m sitting, as a writer whose last name isn’t “King” or “Rowling,” it’s still an ...
