EmilyBlips "Actually, I use the term "SciFi" to refer to science fiction films and I use the terms "science fiction" or "sf" for science fiction books." Ah ha, I was just saying this yesterday.
Although I will disagree with him, since I DO see the derogatory nature of sci-fi, although I sort of ignore it in my usage. I know there are good book and bad books, good movies and bad movies. Another thing, is that s.f. and sci-fi both end up being science fiction, and I'm not sure how often I use the abbreviations unless I'm blogging or something...

thecrotchetyoldfan Emily,
call me old skool, but I always say science fiction or 'ess eff' and only use skiffy when my intention is derogatory.
In my early days at conventions, I got yelled at by older fans for using the skiffy word and have never forgotten the lesson.

EmilyBlips Yeah, I guess it's true that if you are interacting with the hardcore you probably have to watch your tongue and can't have your own theories of designations anymore, heh.-
thecrotchetyoldfan I think you misunderstood me. I received a proper education in the real definitions of those terms, as used by the people who created the definitions from a position of knowledge and experience.
Fandom may be a ghetto, but it is also the only place where the purity is maintained.
And it has nothing to do with 'watching my tongue'; I was more than welcome to continue to mis-use those words, just as I was free to go hang out with people who thought that improperly using definitions was ok - like comiccon or any non-fan based worship-fest.

EmilyBlips No, I get what you mean. I was mostly kidding--that's what the "heh" was for ;D

Running a bit late - had stuff to do this morning. More moderately soon Fortress of Fortitude has Kenton of the Star Patrol in “Sirens Of Space.” This Wally Wood story is from Strange Worlds #5. What Is Science Fiction Starlinks, Value Added
Mike Brotherton: SF Writer —
... Going old school, from sfsignal.com, Harlan Ellison leads a discussion about “sf” vs. “sci-fi” and some distinctions between the terms. Sci-fi has become a nasty label in some quarters, referring to the dumb science fiction in movies and tv, if used at all. Funny how labels can so easily take on an emotional charge. ...
Why You Should Never Call Science Fiction "Sci Fi" [Linguistic Semantics]
io9 —
... Ellison, Yvonne Fern and Herbert Solow (the man who not only developed Star Trek as a television series, but also gave Gene Rodenberry the unfortunate nickname "The Great Bird Of The Galaxy"). In the clip below, they discuss whether "Sci Fi" demeans the genre of science fiction - and the result is oddly compelling, even if they're splitting linguistic hairs and acting like cultural snobs in the process.
