SciFi to be Syfy: Who You Calling Human?
When You Stop Believing in It, It Doesn't Go Away —
Rebranding contortions are often funny. This one especially because it's such a bald-faced attempt to run away from a label that very few people really care about...and because Dave Howe took a not-so-subtle backhanded swipe at the ScFi channel's (presumed) current audience. You really have to read the whole thing to get the flavor, but here's the funniest part: ...
Effective Immediately
Ecstatic Days —
... …this blog will be known as Eksy Dys, per the always hyper-smart Sci Fi Channel’s decision to replace stalwart vowels with iffy ones and call themselves, dumb roll please, Sy Fy. Wot wot? Did April Fool’s Day come early. Am I awake? Am I? ...

... Now we finally have an official name change from the folks at NBC Universal and it's a big one: the Sci Fi network is becoming... the Syfy network. ...
Really, Guys?
Tor.com —
... In a misguided attempt to make the Sci Fi Channel, “broader, more open and accessible and relatable and human-friendly brand,” the network is changing its name to a made-up meaningless configuration of letters that appear to be pronounced exactly the same as Sci Fi. ...
Syfy
Warren Ellis —
Years ago, when I had a development deal at Sci-Fi Channel, I was told that the upper echelons of the company weren’t really happy with the name "Sci-Fi Channel" and had long been looking for a replacement. An associate snarkily commented that maybe Bonnie Hammer would be happier with an Oprah-like branding. One of the Sci-Fi staffers shook their head sadly and said, "I was in that meeting, actually."
And then:
In some universe, the name “Syfy” is less geeky than the name “Sci Fi.” Dave Howe, ...
“They’re all gonna laugh at you!” Sci Fi Channel changes name to SyFy.
Enter the Octopus —
... I almost feel bad calling your attention to how incredibly stupid this is. It’s not even sporting - it’s like shooting fish in a barrel. From what I hear, executives consider this rebranding as part of a strategic opportunity to distance the channel from science fiction’s “geeky” image in hopes of appealing to a broader audience. ...
A Name Change for The Sci-Fi Channel
The Wertzone —
... The source article also features some particularly clueless comments by 'TV historian' Tim Brooks about how people don't realise they are watching an SF movie when they see something like Star Wars (I think the lasers and spaceships might have given the game away) and how the term 'Sci-Fi' is considered derogatory in SF circles (true enough) but is still regarded as being 'cooler' than 'Science Fiction' (no, it isn't). ...

Biology in Science Fiction —
... It was announced earlier this week that the SciFi channel is changing its name to the SyFy channel. I think the new moniker is pretty silly-looking, but I do understand why the S_F_ channel might want to use a more trademarkable spelling. But what's really annoying is w ...

Apex Book Company —
... I still think it’s an April Fools joke that was released into the wild too early: Sci Fi Channel Aims to Shed Geeky Image With New Name. ...
Hey, Janet! Have You Got Syfy?
Notes From The Geek Show —
This is old news, but I’ve been busy so I’m only now getting the time to laugh about it. Yes, the Sci-Fi channel has decided that the name "Sci-Fi" is just too damn geeky. It's too uncool for school, unhipper than a groovy cat gone grody to the max. Daddio, it's just not happening, dig? So they're going to call it "Syfy". The whole article is comic genius. [W]hen new executives join the network, they usually ask if it has ever thought about changing the name. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA No shit. Now this honking-ass huge purveyor of pulp is trying to get shot of the label because it carries ...
