Realms of Fantasy is NOT closing; sold to Tir Na Nog Press
SFScope —
Tir Na Nog Press just purchased Realms of Fantasy from Sovereign Media, and already has a brief web site available at realmsoffantasymag.com (they're planning to have a much more elaborate web site soon). Publisher Warren Lapine feels it's much more important to get things running quickly—since the deal just happened—rather than spend more time behind the scenes. Lapine said, "This is a win-win for everyone. I think Sovereign Media is really happy to be able to leave the magazine to the field, and I'm really happy to keep such an important magazine publishing." He continued, ...

New Realms of Fantasy art guidelines, and a promotion
SFScope —
Realms of Fantasy 's Assistant Editor Douglas Cohen will be retaining that job under the magazine's new ownership, but he's also been promoted to Nonfiction Editor and Art Director. Under that latter title, he's issued new art submission guidelines. One of the biggest changes he and the magazine will be instituting with art is that covers will now be chosen from commissioned interior art, rather than purchased as separate covers. Realms will be paying $450 for interior art, with a $200 bonus for the piece chosen for the cover. For full details on submitting art to the ...

SFScope —
New owner Warren Lapine seems committed to keeping Realms of Fantasy as much like it was as possible. His newest announcement is that Jeff Kight will continue with his role. Kight has been the Advertising Director for former publisher Sovereign Media for four years, responsible for all the ads in Realms , Sci Fi Magazine , Otaku USA , World War II History , and Military Heritage . First purchases for Realms of Fantasy under new owner
SFScope —
Douglas Cohen, who now sports the titles of Art Director and Nonfiction Editor at the newly reborn Realms of Fantasy , writes to tell us of the first fiction purchases under the new ownership. He emphasizes "we're not yet open to submissions (all these purchases were stories caught in limbo when the magazine was first shut down)." He also notes, for authors still waiting to hear about their submissions, that there are still more stories received before the magazine was closed which are awaiting Editor Shawna McCarthy's reading and decision. The newly purchased stories are: "In ...
Douglas Cohen joins Fantastic Books as a freelance acquisitions editor
SFScope —
Warren Lapine has taken on a yet another acquiring editor for his POD line of sf/f/h titles called Fantastic Books: Douglas Cohen . Cohen wears several editorial hats at Realms of Fantasy magazine (which Lapine's Tir Na Nog Press recently brought back from the dead); but this new position is in addition to that work. Cohen writes: "I expect to start actively looking for authors and books this Monday, but I am accepting submissions as of now. For those unfamiliar with my tastes, I am open to and enjoy all sorts of fantasy, but definitely have preferences for pieces set in secondary worlds and/or ...

Realms of Fantasy offering free advertising for small-press magazines
SFScope —
[image] Warren Lapine, the new publisher of Realms of Fantasy , has decided that publishing the magazine brings with it other obligations. To that end, he writes: For the last fifteen years Realms of Fantasy hasn't really been part of the science fiction/fantasy community. Now that I'm the publisher of the magazine that is changing. However, I'd like to do more than just bring it into the community. I'd like to use it to help promote community. I think [Art Director and Nonfiction Editor] Doug [Cohen] and my blogs do some of that. But I'd like to do more. I'd like to offer small press and semi pro sf/f/h ...

To wit, he writes that under the new management, the paper quality has increased, as has the cover price. "What you might be unaware of, however, is that to this point, the old subscription price has remained intact from when the magazine still cost $3.99. So I'm writing to inform you folks that the subscription price will soon be going up, which was bound to happen after we increased the cover price. "But it won't be for another month.
