A few speculations about "scenes"
OF Blog of the Fallen —
... and Jacques Barcia's two Portuguese and English-language blogs and reading in passing their comments on the Brazilian SF scene and their own writing careers has been a true learning experience. Sometime in the next few weeks, I hope to get started on the three anthologies/novella that Fábio sent to me this month, because I am quite curious to see how the themes and story structures will differ and resemble those found in Anglo-American SF anthologies and collections. ...
Fantasy Anthology Review
When Gravity Fails —
Well, technically part one of an ongoing review, of The Solaris Book Of New Fantasy, over at the fantastic Post-Weird Thoughts. Due to their very nature, anthologies are a pain to review. They end up huge, but shallow, since each story gets only a paragraph of hurried comments. Worst of all, by the time you end the book you must come back to every title to remember what the story`s about. So I've decided to try another method. Beginning today, I'll review anthologies on a ...

Blogger Book Club Reminder: Bruce Sterling's Schismatrix Plus, December 8-12
OF Blog of the Fallen —
... I meant to post this one week reminder yesterday, but I was so exhausted after returning to work from Thanksgiving Break that I fell asleep soon after arriving home. Anyways, as per Fábio Fernandes, who chose this book, Bruce Sterling's Schismatrix Plus will be the second Blogger Book Club entry, with a scheduled discussion date on various participating blogs the week of December 8-12. ...
Meme: SFF Review Blogs
The Antick Musings of G.B.H. Hornswoggler, Gent. —
John Ottinger, of Grasping for the Wind, is trying to making a list of as many of the people reviewing fantasy and SF online, and he decided to crowd-source the task. His idea was that anyone who does review SFF should repost his ever-growing list, include themselves on it, and backlink to his master list (so he can update it). So, I'll play along. This is the list as I grabbed it at 9 AM EST on Friday, December 12th, with one very special addition: A Dribble Of Ink Adventures in Reading The Agony Column The Antick Musings of G.B.H. Hornswoggler, ...

Book Reviewers Linkup Meme

Grasping for the Wind has started the daunting task of collecting links of fellow book reviewers. If you are a reviewer and don’t see your name on the list, all you have to do is take the list from his blog , post it on your site, and add yourself to the list in alphabetical order. While you’re at it, might as well check out some of the links that are new to you! A Dribble Of Ink Adventures in Reading The Agony Column The Antick Musings of G.B.H. Hornswoggler, Gent. A book reviewers' linkup meme
Hassenpfeffer Archive —
John at the SF book review site Grasping for Wind posts: My list of fantasy and sf book reviewers is woefully out of date. I need your help to fix that. But rather than go through the hassle of having you send me recommendations or sticking them in comments, what you can do is take the following list and stick it on your website, then add yourself to the list, preferably in alphabetical order. That way, I will be able to track it across the web from back links, and can add each new blog to my roll as it comes along. So take this list, add it to your blog, and add a link to your blog ...
Going Viral
Fantasy Debut —
John has started what we like to call a phenomenon. He has started a post which has gone viral. This meme was picked up by SF Signal and GalleyCat, among dozens of others. Here is the latest list from John's post, along with his instructions: "My list of fantasy and sf book reviewers is woefully out of date. I need your help to fix that. Four Poster Blog (I wish it were a bed)
The Crotchety Old Fan —
Today, I add The Crotchety Old Fan to John Ottinger’s meme list of SF review blogs. It has gotten a LOT larger since it was first reported by SFSignal. But it is an excellent idea and, despite the fact that I do far more commentary than reviews here, I still want to be a part of it. I will have at least three other posts today - one my review (hah!) of The Day the Earth Stood Still and another about re-makes and finally, a poll that examines the concision of science fiction and paintball - or maybe not. Meanwhile, I have a lot of new (to me) blogs to check out and a lot more to add to my own blogroll - including ...

Year in Review
Roberson's Interminable Ramble —
Over on the Post-Weird Thoughts blog, Fábio Fernandes has been running down his favorite reads of 2008, and this morning he's up to part 5 - The Novels. And hey, look at that! Along with such stalwarts as Gaiman, Gibson, Chabon, and Scalzi (and Pyr stablemates David Louis Edelman, Ian McDonald, and Joe Abercrombie), I'm surprised to find myself cropping up, with The Dragon's Nine Sons and End of the Century both on the list. Thanks, Fábio!

Fantasy Book Critic on End of the Century
Roberson's Interminable Ramble —
Fábio Fernandes (he of Post-Weird Thoughts) has reviewed End of the Century for the Fantasy Book Critic. I'm delighted to see that Fábio has "gotten" what I was hoping to accomplish with this book more than any reviewer so far, it seems. I'll quote more of the review than I would normally do, to point out a few examples. Good writers don´t necessarily try to “make it new”, as Ezra Pound used to say. Pound, alas, is dead, and so is Modernism, for that matter. What good writers do, though, is tell a compelling story mixing and remixing old ...

Ottinger’s Book Review Blog List
The Crotchety Old Fan —
John Ottinger has finished the compilation of the Book Review Blog List that started as a meme last year, inspired me to capsule review all the blogs (here) and inspired John Anealio to write a song that included most of the blog names. Particularly mine.
I did my bit this year, suggesting no less that three review blogs - which I see have been added to the list - and am including it a posting (will soon be adding them all to an updated blogroll on my site) as suggested by John. Here. What you are reading now. And perhaps you’ll notice the name of my blog at the end of the ...

A few months back the blog Grasping for the Wind started a SF/F/H Reviewer Linkup Meme. My reviews are here, but head under the cut for a true smorgasbord of genre book review sites.

A galaxy full of SF/F/H blogs
FROM A SCI-FI STANDPOINT —
I guess I’m a little late in posting this, but here I am, doing my duty (I’m such a damned procrastinator). John at Grasping for the Wind went to the trouble of compiling this massive list of blogs that include, as at least a portion of their mission, reviews of science fiction and/or fantasy and/or horror. Everyone’s been posting this on their blogs in order to expose people to some new review sources, and to generate a lot of cross-traffic. Here’s John’s master list. Take a look, and enjoy all this literary bloggy goodness. A B C D E F G H I ...

... through the reading of both Shriek and Finch. (More on that on later posts, though.) The final stories both explain and confound us. They are meant to do so, for the reader is also a visitor in Ambergris, and she/he must experience the same disorientation a real tourist would. Perhaps the same horror. Certainly the same wonder. (This review was first published in Post-Weird Thoughts) ...
The Ambergris Week - Part 3: Finch

... of finality. When we get closer to the book´s ending and we slowly become aware that there will be no more Ambergris stories (paraphrasing Paul Éluard, there may be, but in other worlds), we feel awful. we feel like crying. As if we had lost an old friend. Like Ambergris. This is the last transmission of this insurgent cell (for now, at least). Thank you for staying with us until the end of this long week. Long live Ambergris. (This review was first posted in Post-Weird Thoughts) ...
