John Scalzi - The Look, Not the Idea, Makes a SciFi Movie
blogs.amctv.com — Let's talk about genre for a moment, shall we? Specifically, what is it that makes a film... a genre film? The easy answer here is that something is a genre film if it has particular plot elements, or if it attracts a certain audience. So, for example, ... Ah, you asked him about Young Adult fiction!

I'm convinced -- and this is really only a recent development -- that the very best youth fiction happens when grown-up novels by science fiction and fantasy authors are misfiled in the kids' section. For instance: I left a Barnes and Noble with a stack of YA fiction, and that was the first time I've ever read China Mieville (the book was Un Lun Dun, which is grown-up steampunk masquerading in the kids' section).

I also left B&N with a copy of The Invention of Hugo Cabret which, despite its kiddie-lit status, totally earned its National Book Award nomination (not to mention its Caldecott Medal, its Quill Award, and whatever 300 other honors it garnered).

It's really interesting with some of the books that cross over and where they get shelved. I get a lot of YA-level books these days since they are selling so well these days. Other recent books that cross over well include the much talked about Little Brother by Doctorow and The Inferior by Peadar O'Guillin - it was marketed as YA when released in the UK last year, but I believe is being marketed as strait-up sci-fi in the US.

China Mieville is an excellent writer and I hope you seek out some of his other books. Perdido Street Station and The Scar are particularly good.
