Audience Participation: Why Don’t Readers Comment On Fiction?

We get a lot of comments on our non-fiction but hardly any on our fiction, and we're not alone. We're wondering what prompts or prohibits readers from commenting on fiction online in the forums or comments sections provided by the magazines.
